ABSTRACT
POTENTIAL ESTATE invites you to CABINET ANCIAUX presented at the 1st Brussels Biennial, Postal Sorting Center – Midi/Zuid Station.

On October 17 (press preview), 18 (professional Preview) & 19 (Public Opening) Cabinet Anciaux opens its doors at 11 AM with the Official Film Première of THE CRYING OF POTENTIAL ESTATE.

POTENTIAL ESTATE is a temporary alliance of Belgian artists that operates along models of self-organization and participation, a practice that is highlighted in a number of cabinets, public events and a website.

CABINET ANCIAUX is named after Marie-Adèle Anciaux (1887-1983) also known as Mary Smiles. Anciaux was a libertarian who participated at early pedagogical experiments along with her husband Stephen Mac Say (1883-1972) teacher, beekeeper, stallholder and author. In 1928, Mac Say published From Fourier to Godin the first complete survey on Godin’s Familistère, the only successful and long lasting utopian community based on Fourier’s communalist theories. The Familistère located in Northern France was a philosophical, social and architectural utopia that lasted a century. Fourier’s writings about turning work into play influenced the young Karl Marx, a former Brussels resident.

Film synopsis: An auctioneer sells a story at an art gallery opening by competitive bidding. The narrative for sale features three characters: Wally Hope, the Indian and the Tiny Economist, all of them residing in a doubling of a national space. Belgium, a little village rooted in the Belgian emigration to Wisconsin (USA), becomes the stake of a new conquest. Carried away by the dramatic plot, which is cut up into lots and sold to the highest bidder, the public at the opening – spectators, investors and passers-by – rashly shifts position from extra to actor in becoming an accomplice to a long-drawn murder. At the same time scenario, event and investment opportunity, The Crying of Potential Estate establishes diverse modes of production in a futuristic factual fiction.

Potential Estate is pleased to announce that a Collective Property Sales will be developed during the Brussels Biennial in collaboration with Kristin Rogghe & Veronique Vaes, Potential Estate Agents.

Potential Estate will offer the film THE CRYING OF POTENTIAL ESTATE as a Gift to the Village of Belgium, WI (USA). The Gift, certified by an attorney at law, will be made possible by a number of private shareholders. More details soon.
